MdM is present in Algeria since October 2005 supporting Saharaoui refugees In order to upgrade and preserve health care system in the area of Tintouf.
MdM run a humanitarian program financed by the Department of Humanitarian Aid of European Union ( ECHO) aiming at upgrading health system in the area and creating infrastructures for the storage and maintenance of medicines. The region of Tintouf , where Saharoui camps are , is a barren, rocky area where the survival of the displaced persons is based exclusively on the international, humanitarian aid. The extreme climatic conditions in Sahara, reaching 50 degrees during the day, make medicine storage difficult. The maintenance system in drugstores and hospitals is insufficient and very often medicines that arrive to the beneficiaries are inappropriate for use. MdM have established a system of examination of medicines and provision of pharmaceutical store in order to cover refugee’s needs. In addition, they implemented an effective system of refrigeration and medicines storage , ensuring their quality to the high temperatures in desert. MdM ,also, installed incinerators for the appropriate management of medical waste in Health Centers in the region. MdM ,from the beginning of this program, provide each year medicines and pharmaceutical store of € 400.000 to the vulnerable population and they coordinate the other NGO organizations who supply medicines to the region. MdM realize quality tests for medicines in drugstores and hospitals in the area and they educate the employees in drugstores with the aim of the right management of supplies. At the same time, they control the management of pharmaceutical waste and the extension of the expulsion net.
