Program of medical and pharmaceutical as well as psychosocial support from the part of Medecins du Monde.

The program “Open Polyclinic “ operates with the aim of providing primary medical health care and psychosocial support to people who lack access to the National Health Care System as the immigrants, the refugees without legal license of their stay in the country, the poor people or these without insurance, homeless people and Roma populations.



Polyclinic in Athens

The program is based on 3 parts including the Primary Health Care, where the medical personnel of the Polyclinic helps the patients during its opening hours, the Emergency Cases, which are based on a net of volunteers in all the hospitals of the country, which intervenes in cases of urgent access to the National Health Care System, getting over the bureaucratic obstacles and finally the Drugstore , which provides medicines to the patients.

In Athens, this program operates since 1997.From the beginning of its function ,more than 100.000 patients have received medical and pharmaceutical care for free from the Polyclinic. During the last years, specialized teams of volunteers cure , on average, 14.000 of patients each year. The main origin countries of the beneficiaries are Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, African Countries, Iran, Bulgaria, Poland, Ukraine and Albania.

 
Polyclinic in Thessaloniki

The Polyclinic of Thessaloniki began operation in 2001. Since then, there have been over 50,000 visits from patients who have received the services of dozens of volunteers, doctors, nurses, psychologists, social scientists and administrative volunteers independent from status, who provide primary health care, medical care, vaccinations and psychosocial support to people in need. About 70 doctors of various specialties, staff the medical team inside and outside the Polyclinic which operates daily between 09:00 and 17:00, serving people throughout the region and prefecture of Thessaloniki.

From 2010 onwards, the proportion of Greek patients, who arrive at the Polyclinic increased rapidly. As a result approximately 65% of visits consist of Greeks, followed by percentages country of origin Albania, Georgia, Nigeria, Armenia, Bulgaria, etc., reaching an average monthly total of 1,500 visits.

 

 
Polyclinic in Chania

The Open Polyclinic in Chania was set up in 2007 to meet the local medical needs of those lacking access to the National Health System. 

At the Open Polyclinic patients are provided with free primary health care and suitable medication by 15 volunteers doctors specialized in various fields, along with 30 volunteers working as support personnel. In cooperation with doctors and laboratories in all over Crete and Chania, the polyclinic also enables patients to undergo certain laboratory tests free of charge.

Chania Open Polyclinic volunteers have extended their activity, making visits throughout Crete. Likewise, they have undertaken the medical and pharmaceutical care of immigrants, Roma and prisoners in their places of detention. They distribute food and clothing to needy families and visit schools and villages, briefing local communities, especially young people, on volunteerism and on the activity carried out by the Doctors of the World. 

Held in high regard by the citizens of Chania and Crete overall, the Doctors of the World have highlighted the name of their organization and are present wherever there is human pain and misery, without discrimination based on race, colour or creed. 

 
Polyclinic in Perama

The Free Clinic of Perama was set up in September 2010. Since the end of 2011 a staggering number of people of all ages: destitute, homeless, unemployed people without health insurance coverage, or others who until recently owned a small private business but since they weren’t able to pay their social security funds are not entitled to free access to National Health System, have received free healthcare support.

With a view to filling the continuously growing needs of the local population, Medecins du Monde incorporated in their medical crew, doctors of a variety of specialties such as: General Practitioner, Surgeon, Radiologist, Dermatologist, Gynecologist, Cardiologist, Pediatrician, Orthopedist, Pulmonologist, Physiotherapist, Psychiatrist, Ophthalmologist, Psychologist and Neurologist.

Nowadays, about 50 to 70 persons visit the Open Polyclinic each day, some days possibly even more depending on the doctor specialties available.

Polyclinic in Patra

Médecins du Monde have extended their domestic actions within Greece by expanding the existing programs and setting up new health service facilities. As part of this effort, on September 3rd of 2012, MdM started operating the Organization's fifth Open Polyclinic in the city of Patra. Located on 92 Kapodistriou str & Panachaikou str the Open Polyclinic runs daily, Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. 

Just as the rest MdM Open Polyclinics of Athens (1990), Thessaloniki (2001), Chania (2007) and Perama (2009), the Open Polyclinic of Patra is principally aimed at providing primary health care services to: residents of West Greece who are not medically insured; individuals who need international protection; and all those who have either limited or no access to National Health Care System. Particular care is taken to protect vulnerable population groups such as women, children and unattended minors and to support local medical facilities. 

The newly-established Open Polyclinic offers primary health care services and psychosocial support. On a daily basis doctors, nurses and personnel of various specialties offer their voluntary services.
