The program is being realised through visits every week to the gypsy’s camps to the region of Athens , in areas like Aspropyrgos, Nea Zoi, Gorytsa, Spata and Eleusina. It is very difficult to estimate with precision the number of Roma in Attiki area , but 30% of the total population live in Greece. In Greece we distinguish two groups of Roma , the displaced persons and the already installed. The first live as nomads and the second one live to the big urban centres , in downgraded areas. Roma are installed to some specific areas in Athens as Zefyri, Aspropurgos, Liosia, Agia Varvara.

Most Roma camps are close to downgraded areas , where the residents are often exposed to many infections and microbes. To the most camps , there is no access to electric current or to water. In addition, they do not follow the most basic rules of hygienic and as a consequence this influences the average life expectancy of Roma and mainly of the children which is estimated to at least one decade less.

Many researches prove their insufficient medical care , as the overwhelming percentage of Roma declares that many discriminations take place by the side of medical staff and very often they are not covered by the healthcare system due to the lack of even the most basic official documents. Furthermore, the ignorance or the absence of information about their rights as well as the difficulty to understand the administrative system are the most aggravating factors of this situation.

The program is being realized with the support of Interamerican in the frame of the corporate, social responsibility.

In the frame of this program, pediatrics, specialised doctors and administrative employees visit, in a regular basis , the mobile unit of the Organisation , the gypsy’s camps in the region of Thessaloniki , where both children and adults are examined medically.
