Program of MdM about the vulnerable group of drug users.

Streets of Athens is a program that MdM is implementing since 2000 with the aim of the reduction of harm , the provision of primary health care and the psychosocial consulting for drug users. The mobile medical unit of the program , with the team of volunteers is visiting on a weekly basis Omonoia square , which consists meeting point of drug addicts , and with the method of “streetwork” , they approach them in order to intervene into the direct problems they face due to the drugs use and to their living conditions. The need of such kind of intervention is really important as this population includes people who lack of support , living under precarious conditions , having malnutrition and decreasing access to Health care System.

In the frame of this Program , they promote the secure use of substances and the reduction of harm , through the exchange of used syringes. Aim of this process is the protection of the users and the social environment.In addition, we realize medical control ,through medical tests to everyone who wants it, as well as the informing of all users about hepatitis, HIV virus and other transmittable diseases. Doctors and psychologists of the team offer primary health care and psychosocial consulting to persons who visit the medical unit and refer the medical cases to the responsible institutions and hospitals being on duty. Furthermore, very important is the program’s offer on issue of prevention and sensibilisation referring to matters of health and hygiene.

The scientific team of the Program consists of volunteers doctors, nurses, psychologists and other mental health professionals , social scientists and other specialities.
