Médecins du Monde Greece received an important recognition for its work in promoting mental health in Ukraine from the World Health Organization during the Mental Health Forum.
The award to Médecins du Monde Greece for its contribution to supporting the integration of the MhGAP program into higher and medical education in Ukraine and promoting the creation of a new generation of doctors is an important recognition of the actions of Médecins du Monde within the country since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
This honorary distinction was awarded during the Mental Health Forum organized in Kiev, November 5-6, 2025, by the World Health Organization in collaboration with important bodies such as the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and Olena Zelenska’s “How Are You” mental health program, among others. On behalf of Médecins du Monde Greece, the award was received by the coordinator of Médecins du Monde Greece’s mental health activities, Dr. Volodymyr Korostiy.
Now in their fourth consecutive year of action in Ukraine, MdM-Greece’s mental health training programs aim to reform the health system in line with modern scientific standards by strengthening the capacity of community and primary health care institutions to provide better mental health services and reduce stigma, especially in eastern border areas such as Sumy.
Through important partnerships with local agencies and institutions, the continuation of MdM’s action is guided by experience and the recording of needs in the field, and aims on the one hand to meet the critical needs created by the war, and on the other hand to address chronic deficits and dysfunctions in local health structures, which are now finding it even more difficult to cope with the pre-existing, new, and growing needs of the suffering Ukrainian people.
It is worth noting that this is the second major award for Médecins du Monde Greece for its actions in Ukraine, having received the European Citizen’s Prize for 2022 from the European Parliament.
